description Step back in time as you're surrounded by the largest stone fort ever built by the British Colonies. The historic stone fort stood as a key to Maryland's frontier defense during the French and Indian War. Fort Frederick was built in 1756 and has been painstakingly restored. Historic displays are inside the Fort, barracks and Visitor Centers. The park annually holds military reenactments and other special events. Its lands adjoin the Potomac River and the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal passes through it.
drivingDirection Fort Frederick State Park is located in the Cumberland Valley, 18 miles west of Hagerstown and one mile south of I-70 near Big Pool. Or Rt. 56, Exit 12. One mile to entrance. The park is 88 miles from Baltimore and 81 miles from Washington D.C.

importantInformation ALCOHOL POLICY: The consumption or possession of an open container of an alcoholic beverage will be prohibited in all state park areas with the exception of interior areas of full-service cabins and motorhomes. Alcohol permits will only be issued through a reservation for a designated shelter, or other approved facility. A $35 fee will be charged for each alcohol permit and must be obtained 1-day out prior to arrival. Permits may be revoked for cause by Park Manager, their designee or a Natural Resources Police Officer. Internet shelter reservations requiring an alcohol permit will need to contact the Call Center at 1-888-432-2267, Mon-Fri, 8 am - 8 pm to make your reservation.
